CHAPTER 13
“Even if I can’t say it, it’s not that I don’t care
This can’t beat the power of love, can it?
If you look at my heart
This will be our shortcut
If you show your true self
I won’t give up loving you
This dream that it’s starting now
I want to get closer to it little by little”
Love Situation
— How are you feeling? Your crises are under control?
Satoshi sighed, rehearsing a unworried expression before smiling at the psychologist, who stared at him behind his preppy glasses. He wondered, at that moment, if he only used those to seem more professional, since he couldn’t remember him wearing them in the past.
Maybe that was the case since, now that he was considering it, he had only seen Sho using glasses at his office. And if his intention was to look like a more reliable specialist, he had achieved it perfectly.
Behind those red glasses, he seemed nothing like the ironic and funny person he had always been. Nor even the fact that he was his best friend could ease the pressure of being analyzed by him. Quite the opposite! Sho was an incorruptible and competent professional and would never act on his favor if he didn’t believe he was doing the right thing.
Therefore, his superiors allowed him to have Sho as his psychologist, even though it was against the ethical code.
But, what else could they do? After the tragic death of his father, Satoshi had remained in catatonic state for almost a year. Even though the department had sent several professionals to take care of him, Sho had been the only one to whom he reacted. Therefore, under Maeda-san’s supervision, he received the approval to follow his treatment.
From then on, he had periodical consultation with him every four months or whenever requested, as in his last case of abusing of authority. At that exact moment, Sho was evaluating if he was ready to go back to the streets, after the end of his sick leave.
— I’m fine, Sakurai-sensei — Ohno answered, focused in addressing his friend properly in that kind of formal situation. — I still have some nightmares, but they are much less intense than before and, since the last time I had to call you, I didn’t have any other panic crisis.
— This is very good news!
He nodded and continued his session, telling the man about his more recent visit to the psychiatrist, the reduction on his medicines and even random things that Sho incited him on telling.
— I believe I am ready to return to the department — he affirmed at a certain point of the conversation, when Sho finally asked him about work.
— Are you sure? — the psychologist inquired, his eyes locked on his.
— Absolutely — he said, with conviction. — I believe I’ll be much more useful in the streets, where I can do the work I was trained to do.
— You don’t feel yourself useful doing the bureaucratic work, Ohno-san?
For a moment, he considered sending Sho to hell, bothered by the countless useless questions to which they both know perfectly the answer.
However, unlike any other professional that could be trying to destabilize him in order to bring him to some sort of contradiction, he knew his friend was just following a script. After all, he himself had to use that excessive questioning technic for several times during the questioning sessions that he had conducted.
— It’s an useful work, Sakurai-san, but it’s not of my liking spending the whole day locked in an office — he decided to be the most honest he could.
— I miss the action. And not only because of the adrenaline, but because I know I’m good in what I do. Therefore, I would like to go back to action as soon as possible.
— I see — Sho said, writing something on a paper. Then, he looked down to another block of paper, which he flipped, attentive. — I see that your orthopedist has released you to go back to the streets. However, he prescribed moderation and periodic returns for treatment. I believe he might have alerted you in your last consultation, right?
— Yes — he confirmed. — I’ve been with Aiba-sensei yesterday and he informed me about my current condition.
— And are you willing to follow his advices?
— I am. I don’t want to push my luck, Sakurai-sensei. I understand I’m not a super hero — he repeated one of the terms Sho had used to talk about him in one of their previous sessions. — I know that, in the past, I have overdid my actions, as well as disregarded my physical and psychological conditions, but I’m willing to change. Besides…
— Now you have a reason to get back home in one piece, haven’t you? — completed the specialist with an ironic smile he knew quite well. — How is the newlywed life going?
— Eh? — Satoshi’s voice high-pitched in revolt. — I can’t believe this might be relevant to my report about my return to work!
— It really isn’t. This has nothing to do with the report! I’m just curious…
— Sakurai-sensei! — he scolded his friend. — Where is your professionalism? I thought you would never mix your work with personal matters…
— And I don't do it — Sho affirmed, taking off his glasses and placing them over the table. — Your time has ended twenty seconds ago — he pointed with his head to the digital clock on the wall. — Please, Satoshi! I want every tiny detail…
— There’s nothing to tell — Ohno interrupted him, with an embarrassed expression. — Nino and I are not newlyweds! He just needed a place to stay and I offered him my apartment. I live alone and…
— Come on, Satoshi! Do you really believe I don’t know you enough to see that you are having sex?
— That’s not it! I…
— You are happy — Sho intervened, his mock tone changing into tenderness and pride. — Your eyes — he explained in face of Satoshi's confused look — have a different glimmer on them. You look more peaceful too, almost satisfied. You are obviously in love, Nii-chan!
— Sho...
— Please, don’t try to deny it.
“Son of a bitch!”, the cop cursed in his thoughts. Sho knew him too well for him to contradict him. Besides, he couldn’t deny that living with Nino has really changed him. Since the lad had moved in, he felt no longer the bitterness or the pain of solitude. On the contrary! He felt himself lighter, as if his life had a meaning again. During the day, when he was at work, he missed him, counting every lacking minute to get home and receiving his open welcoming smile.
He could barely wait for their talks during dinner; for the intimacy they shared on the sofa, while they were watching TV or listening to music; for the sex they did almost every night. Yes, he was in love and living a relationship he has never believed he could have.
But…
— It’s not what you’re thinking, Sho — he forced himself to say. Although he knew Nino felt the same, Satoshi didn’t know him enough yet. There were too many blanks in the lad’s life and, not matter how open to conversation he seemed to be, he remained reserved, talking too little about himself. He couldn’t also get what he thought about their relationship. They had never had any kind of talk about the subject, not even labeled their situation.
Maybe because, so far, they have never needed to classify it for someone else.
— If you wanna fool yourself, fine… — Sho shrugged, arranging his reports into a briefcase. — I’m sure of what I’m saying, though, and I plan to see it with my own eyes in a dinner at your house tomorrow — he invited himself, unashamed. — Eight o’clock is okay for you both?
Satoshi opened his mouth to refuse, annoyed with his friend's lack of tact, but he didn't complain. After all, knowing Sho the way he did, he was sure he wouldn’t calm down until he would satisfy his curiosity.
Besides, it has been almost two months since Nino and him were living together. It was more than time for them to assume their relationship.
— I’ll see you tomorrow at eight, then — he confirmed. — And take Aiba-san with you, I owe him a dinner in gratitude.
*****************
— Oh-chan — Nino whispered, while those hungry lips attacked his neck. — Your friends shall arrive here at any moment now…
— So, we must be really fast… — Satoshi retorted, his lips traveling down his neck.
Nino smiled and allowed him to kiss the region for a while, but when his hands went down to his zipper, the youngest pushed him away, softly.
— We can finish this later — he determined, making Satoshi fall on the bed. — I need to check the food — he concluded, pecking on his lips and disappearing through the door.
Satoshi smiled, in spite of his own frustration. Nino had been nervous since he told him about the dinner and had worked hard on the preparations in order to make everything perfect. It wouldn’t be he to be in the way of his planning, even if his body was shivering in desire. Besides, as the lad said, they could finish that later.
He quickly put on a beige pants and a simple t-shirt. Then, he adjusted his hair at the mirror.
He found Nino covered by an apron, skillfully cutting a portion of shimeji. Over the balcony, there was a tray containing a few ingredients already sliced and organized over the surface. Among them, he recognized chard, bean sprouts, cauliflower and tofu.
— Do you need any help?
— Can you take the pan, the meat and the udon to the table and check if everything is organized around there?
He nodded and obediently went to the room to do what Nino had asked him. He took the chance to turn on in his powerful stereo a collection that the lad had recorded with his favorite songs and pulled the extension to the table in order to plug the cook top, over which he placed the sukiyaki pan. He smiled, satisfied, anticipating Sho’s delighted expression in front of the dish he liked so much.
Right in the moment he thought about his friend, the door bell rang. Nino came in a rush from the kitchen, already without his apron. He seemed nervous but didn’t say a thing.
— Good evening! — Sho greeted them, as soon as he opened the door, entering the apartment with no ado. — I brought us a chocolate cake to celebrate your return to work! — he gave Satoshi a box from a famous candy shop.
— You already know Nino, right, Sho-kun?
The psychologist smiled and shook the hand of Satoshi’s companion.
— How have you been?
— Very well, Sakurai-san. It’s nice to see you again! — he said, with a smile.
Then, Ohno turned to Aiba, who was still waiting at the door.
— This is the orthopedist who handled my knee.
— Aiba Masaki — he introduced himself, friendly, while bowing politely.
Satoshi couldn’t avoid admiring the man for his charisma. He had liked him the moment Sho introduced him the doctor and he knew it would be the same with Nino.
— Ninomiya Kazunari.
— Thanks for the invitation — Aiba said, handing two bottles towards the bleached-haired lad. — It’s handmade, I hope you like it.
— Thank you, Aiba-san! — Nino smiled, joyful, looking at the bottles of Honkaku Shochu he had received from the newcomer. Please, make yourself at home — he asked, moving away for them to enter. — I hope you are hungry.
— Starving! — Sho answered, excitedly. — Satoshi mentioned that your father was a chef.
— Yes. We had a Japanese restaurant in Sasakura. I was six-years-old when he died, but he managed to teach me some basic stuff in the kitchen. I’m not a professional, but I hope you enjoy the dinner — he replied, guiding them to the table. — Do you like sukiyaki?
— I love it! — was Sho’s answer, his eyes staring at the preparations over the table. — Wow! You guys have certainly done your best!
— Nabe is Nino’s specialty. He prepared it for me when he moved in. We wanted to try sukiyaki this time. I know you love it!
— As expected of my best friend! — Sho petted the cop’s shoulder before sitting in one of the chairs. — It has been a while since I’ve eaten it… Thanks for the consideration!
— It looks delicious, Nino-kun — Aiba commented with a smile, before making himself comfortable at the table.
— I hope not to disappoint you. I’m going to get the rest of the things. Oh-chan, can you turn on the cook top?
— I’ll help you! — Aiba stood up helpfully, following Nino to the kitchen.
— He’s cute! — Sho mocked his friend, when they were left alone.
— Yes — he agreed and then, he added in a whisper, with a grin. — As well as Aiba-kun.
— Yes, he is. But we are just friends, Satoshi — Sho informed him, understanding his friend’s insinuation.
— What a pity! You two look great together. Why don’t you invest in a relationship, Sho-chan? You have been alone for too long.
— I have no time for relationships, Satoshi — he cut him. — And that’s not the kind of connection Masaki and I have. Besides, I haven’t come to talk about my love life. I came to check on yours and, for what I’ve seen, you and Ninomiya are a perfect match.
— Yeah… I think I’ve found the right person — he confessed.
— In that case, don’t let anything get in your way, Nii-chan. It has been a while since I’ve seen you so calm and pleased. You know that one of my goals in life is to see you happy, don’t you?
Satoshi only had time to smile before Nino and Aiba returned from the kitchen with a basket of eggs and glasses for the shochu. He noticed with satisfaction that Nino had lost his anxiety, almost completely at ease with the guests, as if he has known them for almost as long as he did.
They talked about random stuff and, occasionally, Sho would send him an approving look. Not that he needed it, but it was important to know that his childhood friend had liked his boyfriend — if he could call him that.
— Would you like a bit more of shochu, Aiba-san? — he heard Nino asking, but the doctor didn’t answer as if he wasn't hearing.
And it seemed to be exactly the case, once Aiba had a distant expression. His eyes were teary and lost, as if he was somewhere else in time and space.
— Aiba-san? — Nino insisted, placing a hand over the guest’s shoulder. — Are you alright?
— I am, I… — Masaki mumbled, coming back to reality. — This music that is playing… — he mentioned it, referring to the background music.
— Eh? It’s Smile Again from Cosmos, a new band — Nino clarified it. — It’s my favorite in the album. Do you like it?
— Cosmos is the new band of Raiden, our favorite guitar player — Satoshi added, more to Sho, for he was sure that he wouldn’t understand who were they talking about, then to the orthopedist. — Are you his fan as well, Aiba-chan?
— I am… I was. I mean… Could you excuse me for a minute? — he asked, going to the bathroom, even before they could say a thing.
— Shall I go after him? — Nino asked, in concern.
— No, let him — Sho advised him. — He just need some time. The music caught him by surprise, that’s all.
— But… — Ohno raised a questioning brow to his friend.
— I know it's not my place to say it, but this music brings painful memories to Masaki.
— He identifies himself with the lyrics?
— More than that, Nino. This music was written specifically for him.
— Eh? Aiba-chan knows Raiden?
— Quite well, so to speak. He is his ex-boyfriend.
